In 2007 and 2008 there was an increase of registered nursing jobs of more than 240,000 in the country, and Pittsburgh was no stranger to this trend. This boom in nursing has been attributed to expansion of nursing programs, and to older nurses going back to work or holding off on retirement. Pittsburgh has been pretty stable in its nursing supply, but demand will be ever increasing in hospitals as time goes on. Three major Pittsburgh hospitals are Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, Allegheny General Hospital, and St. Clair Hospital.
