An operating room nurse, or perioperative nurse, assists the surgeons in the operating room by handling instruments, monitoring the patient and suturing incisions. The major professional organization for operating room nurses in the United States is the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). The Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) offers two credentials that are accredited by both the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) and by the American Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC): Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) and Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts excellent, overall job growth for registered nurses.
