There is a continuing nursing shortage in Maryland resulting in plenty of available nursing jobs. The most basic cause of the problem is that an insufficient number of people are entering the field to keep up with demand. Projections show that between 2000 and 2020 there is an anticipated 40 percent increase in the demand for nurses compared to only a projected 6 percent growth in the supply of nurses. This means that hospitals statewide will be looking for qualified candidates to improve the high rate of vacancy, and nursing schools will be aggressively expanding enrollment.

LPN
Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) are nurses that care for sick, disabled, injured or convalescent patients under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. LPNs are licensed by their state and must pass the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-PN, which is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts excellent job growth for LPNs?21% growth between 2008 and 2018, with the best LPN job opportunities expected in nursing care facilities and in-home healthcare services. In 2008, the median annual salary for LPNs was $39,030.
