Infectious Disease Nursing
Infectious disease nurses are clinical nurse specialists that provide care for patients with infectious diseases and help with policy development. Infection control nurses identify and monitor infectious diseases and develop programs to prevent outbreaks. Infection control nurses also create response strategies against bioterrorism. Professional organizations for infectious disease/control nurses include the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). Registered nurses can take the credential exam maintained by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) to earn the title Infection Control Professional (ICP) and add the internationally-recognized initials CIC to their titles. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts excellent, overall job growth for registered nurses.
