Alaska Geriatric Nursing Jobs
The health care industry in Alaska has generated more new jobs, mostly nursing jobs, than any other industry in the state in the past decade. However, Alaska is still in the midst of a serious nursing shortage, much like other states. Nursing educators are in high demand to increase the number of nursing school graduates and help ease the stress on hospitals because of the shortage. Qualified nursing candidates at all levels are sought after, especially in the city areas of Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau.

Geriatric nurses and gerontological nurses work in all healthcare settings to provide both preventative and acute care to the elderly population. Geriatric and gerontological nursing certification programs approved by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) include: Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (GNP-BC), Gerontology CNS (GCNS-BC) and Gerontological Nurse (RN, BC). Professional organizations for geriatric and gerontological nursing include the National Gerontological Nursing Association (NGNA), American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts excellent job growth for registered nurses, and as the elderly population continues to grow, the job outlook will be especially favorable for geriatric and gerontological nurses.
