The state of Mississippi has been dealing with a nursing shortage for awhile, but nursing jobs have especially been in demand since Hurricane Katrina. Fortunately for the state, the Mississippi Office of Nursing Workforce is one of the most innovative nursing workforce centers in the country. They have taken recent steps to bolster training and placement of nurses, and recently helped get a large salary increase approved for nursing faculty. Because of these efforts, student placement has increased dramatically, which will help hospitals fill nursing jobs more effectively in the near future.

Emergency-trauma nurses provide rapid, initial assessment and treatment for patients. Because emergency-trauma nurses treat patients of all ages suffering from an extensive range of illnesses and injuries, they must be able to recognize and treat a wide variety of ailments, quickly and efficiently. The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) offers certification as a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN) and Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN). BCENs CEN and CFRN certification credentials have been accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS).
