Like most of the country, New Jersey is facing the challenge of filling nursing jobs. The issue has been a lack of nursing faculty to train the many students wanting to pursue nursing as a career. A new program called the New Jersey Nursing Initiative is aiming to solve this problem by offering scholarships to current nurses who become instructors, which will lead to a greater enrollment of nursing students who can be trained and placed in hospitals. The program is set to run through 2013, with the goal of boosting nursing jobs and reversing the shortage trend.

Registered nurses make up the largest occupation in healthcare, with 2.6 million jobs and an overall expected job growth rate of 22 percent, which is much faster than the national average across all professions. Registered nurse requirements include earning either a bachelor?s degree in nursing (BSN), associate?s degree in nursing (ADN) or a hospital diploma, passing the NCLEX and becoming licensed by their state. Registered nurses have a wide range of specializations available to them, from geriatric nursing and gastroenterology nursing, to critical care nursing and orthopedic nursing. Registered nurses may also go into teaching or hospital administration. The median registered nurse salary is $62,450.
